Nearly every birth now happens in a facility in most states, with Lakshadweep at 100.0 per cent. Nagaland, at 62.2 per cent, is the clear outlier, and India stands at 90.6 per cent, up from 88.6.
Policy implication When the national figure is near 90 per cent, the remaining gap is concentrated in a few states and in the most remote households, and it needs targeted delivery rather than another national drive.
Data vintage. This map uses NFHS-5 (2019-21). NFHS-6 (2023-24) state fact sheets were released in May 2026, but they are provisional and report fewer indicators, so the figures here have not been replaced.
