CPCB lists 36 river stretches in its most polluted class, with biochemical oxygen demand above 30 mg/L, in 14 states and territories: Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu have 5 each, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat 4 and Karnataka 3. The 18 other states in the table have none in this class. Maharashtra has 54 polluted stretches in all but only 2 are critical, and Kerala has 31, none critical.
Policy implication This is a count of stretches, not a measure of how polluted a state's rivers are overall: states differ in river length and in how many locations are monitored. A state not in CPCB's table of 32 has no polluted stretch listed, which can mean clean water or little monitoring. The monitoring is from 2022 and 2023 and the report is dated September 2025.
