Share of India's inward remittances by state, RBI 2023-24
Five states received two thirds of India's inward remittances in 2023-24: Maharashtra 20.5 per cent, Kerala 19.7, Tamil Nadu 10.4, Telangana 8.1 and Karnataka 7.7, together 66.4. Bihar received 1.3 per cent and Uttar Pradesh 3.0. Maharashtra's share fell from 35.2 per cent in the 2020-21 round, while Kerala's rose from 10.2 to 19.7.
Policy implication A share says where remittances land in total, and it follows population as well as migration: a populous state with few emigrants can have a small share and still receive a great deal per person, and the reverse. It does not show how much a state depends on remittances, which needs state income or consumption beside it. The survey covers remittances received through formal channels for family maintenance, savings and withdrawals from non-resident deposits.
