SRS puts India's maternal mortality ratio at 87 per 100,000 live births for 2022-24, one lower than 88 in 2021-23. Uttar Pradesh (154), Madhya Pradesh (135) and Chhattisgarh and Odisha (124 each) are highest. Kerala (24), Tamil Nadu (25), Maharashtra (37) and Andhra Pradesh (39) are lowest. Uttar Pradesh's 95 per cent interval (115 to 192) lies wholly above Kerala's (0 to 50).
Policy implication Maternal deaths are rare events, so the estimates pool three years and carry wide confidence intervals: Bihar's 96 could be anywhere from 62 to 130. Most gaps between adjacent states are within that noise, and only large gaps, such as Uttar Pradesh against the southern states, are firm. SRS shows 19 states separately and pools the rest as 'Other states' (84), so the remaining states and UTs are grey here.
