SRS puts life expectancy at birth at 70.3 years in India for 2019-23, up 0.4 years from 2018-22. Kerala is highest at 75.1 years, followed by Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh (74.4 each) and Delhi (74.2). Chhattisgarh is lowest at 64.6, followed by Madhya Pradesh (67.6), Uttar Pradesh (68.0) and Assam (68.6), a gap of 10.5 years between the top and bottom. Women outlive men in every state shown, by 7.1 years in Himachal Pradesh and 0.8 in Bihar.
Policy implication Life expectancy is a summary of the death rates of one period at every age, not a forecast of how long any child born now will live. SRS publishes it only for India and the larger states and UTs, so smaller states and the other UTs are grey, and Jammu and Kashmir includes Ladakh. The estimates come from a sample, five years pooled, so a difference of a few tenths of a year between two states is not firm.
