India had 1,67,806 scheduled commercial bank offices at the end of March 2025, 4,590 more than a year earlier, or 11.9 per lakh people. Goa has 43.4 per lakh, then Chandigarh (36.9), Ladakh (34.3), Sikkim (26.4), Lakshadweep (24.3) and Himachal Pradesh (24.2). Bihar has 6.4, Manipur 8.0, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu and Uttar Pradesh 8.1, Jharkhand 8.8 and Assam 9.0.
Policy implication Offices are counted where the branch stands, not where customers live, and the population is a 2024 projection against offices at March 2025. Regional rural banks, cooperative banks, post offices and business correspondents are not in the count, and in the hills and the north-east much banking reaches people through them. Small states and territories with few offices swing on a handful of branches, and a branch count says nothing about who has an account or uses it.
